Riding bicycles has been an integral part of my life every since getting my first one in 1971. Mom took me and my sister to the park, where to my surprise, dad had a shiny new Schwinn Typhoon with training wheels waiting for me. That bike, pictured here, was the love of my life for a long time.
Since then, I’ve had many bikes, from classics to the latest tech. One of the first store bought bikes was of the “bargain” big box retailer versions. A Royce Union cruiser bicycle. It didn’t last long, as we set up a ramp to jump bikes into a swimming pool, and the frame cracked in two the same day I got it. After this I was wary of these types of cheap bikes, and the ever growing number of bikes in my garage is a testimony to the commitment I have to bicycles of all sorts.
Forty some odd years later, I’ve come full circle to that day in June of 1971. Everywhere I go these days, there are bikes everywhere. Bike City is designed to high light the future of these simple contraptions, and celebrate the simple fun they can bring to your life. We’ve worked hard to get more butts on bikes over the years, whether it’s hosting a massive weekly social ride since 2005, working with (and frequently against) municipal leaders that only see a future with roads filled with cars, to publishing a 10 issue run of a bicycle lifestyle magazine. Our goal has always been to highlight the culture more that the sport, and likewise, Bike City will tell the stories about the people and the places that revolve around bicycle culture.
We want to hear your stories, so please feel free to reach out to us HERE. The launch of this website is only the first mile in the journey – we invite you to join the ride.
